Home Care Can Improve An Elder's Quality of Live in Middletown

Get Your Elder Involved in Life Again

First, find out what their previous hobbies were or activities they used to enjoy. Any activity you encourage your elder to participate in will give them something to think about and something new to talk about. This should lead to anticipation and enjoyment.

If your elder used to love watching movies, but their vision has deteriorated till it's no longer enjoyable, perhaps a larger TV capable of using closed captions would be easier for them to read. If they used to love going to museums, bring them art magazines. If they used to like keeping in touch with family and friends but they can no longer hear well enough to use the phone, get them a phone that is equipped for the hearing impaired. The idea is to get them doing something they will enjoy.

Exercise is Important to Leading A Fulfilled Life

Encourage your elder to exercise daily, even if it's just range of motion activities. Concentrate on their abilities, not disabilities. Whether its a short walk around the block or 60 minutes of yoga; always start with a warm up and end with a cool down. Try to get them involved in some physician supervised program, they will not only get exercise but will meet other people and enjoy social interaction. If your elder is not physically able to exercise, put them in a wheelchair and take them outside at least once a day. Only 15 minutes of beautiful sunshine a day will give them something to look forward to.

Proper Nutrition is a Key Element to Improving Your Elder's Lifestyle

Some seniors have problems eating for various reasons; they have difficulty chewing or swallowing, their dentures don't fit like they used to, or their medication decreases their appetite. All contributing to inadequate nutrition. If your elder is preparing their own food, make sure they have an ample supply on hand. Give them a variety of food they request and they enjoy. Perhaps they would enjoy having their lunch delivered to them, either from a favorite restaurant or from Meals on Wheels. Ask them, they'll tell you what they want.

Keeping Up Appearances

Since it may have been years since anyone has really taken an interest in your elders appearance, they will really appreciate your concern. Take them to get a hair cut, a perm, a hot shave, a manicure. Tell them how great they look; they'll love it and they deserve it. Ask them if they are interested in getting any new clothes, what would they like, where would they like to go? You would be surprised what a wonderful impact this will have on your elder.
